Aspen Wood Learning Disabilities
Low Secure Unit, Maghull Health Park

DJI_0314_edited.jpg

The new Aspen Wood Learning Disabilities Low Secure Unit (LDLSU) at Maghull Health Park north of Liverpool was completed in September 2023.

The new LDLSU building is set within a large site on the edge of the Health Park with a welcoming arrival space and car parking zone to the front and a large perimeter garden that is enclosed at the boundary by an open weldmesh 3m height security fence that allows views through to the countryside beyond.

The external landscape environment responds to the organic form of architecture creating a series of private enclosed ward gardens. Within the building there is a central ‘heartspace’ courtyard with a café, smaller courtyards and lightwell spaces. A tented structure over a flexible performance/yoga space forms a focal point at the end of the central promenade that leads out from the central ‘heartspace’ courtyard. There is also an growing garden area provided within the perimeter garden for Service Users and Staff.
